Sales of paperback books exceed millions and millions of dollars annually, and sales increase yearly. In their guidelines for writers of this genre, Bantam Books asked, "Have you ever watched a woman read a romance? When she gets to the place where the hero is not on stage, she flips the page quickly forward to where he is."

A woman's passion for this fiction is increased even more when she turns the last page and returns to her real-life male whose most creative act is contemplating the lint in his navel; whose most romantic deed is giving her a blender for Christmas; and whose idea of a romantic rendezvous is going bowling. And often in between times, Nascar or football receive more attention than she does. Romance writer Serita Stevens, author of This Bitter Ecstasy once told me, "A woman needs to know that someone out there understands her. She needs a sensitive, loving man who's not afraid to say I love you. Magic can be wherever you want it to be." Are you listening guys?

Fortunately there are some men who are tuned in to a woman's needs. A friend of mine met the man in her life on a blind date. They agreed to meet for the first time in a railroad station, and for identification purposes she suggested he wear a red rose in his lapel. Instead he creatively clenched the rose between his teeth, and handed the rest of the bouquet to her. C'mon guys. Get with it. Buy her those flowers. Send her that sentimental card. Give her your undivided attention. Listen, really listen to what she is saying. Take a walk on the beach. Give her one red rose or an unexpected gift "just because". Read her poetry. Give her a helping hand with routine tasks. Write her a love note.
