How many times have you thought about starting your own home business? Have you caught yourself driving to work dreaming about controlling your own schedule and making key decisions? Or better, firing your boss? Let’s face it, many of us would love to run our own home business, trading that hourly commute for an easy stroll from the kitchen to the home office. Many experts would argue today that working for someone else is far riskier than it has ever been, thanks in part to a downward spiral in our economy the last few years. We’ve all heard, or read, about the large exodus of manufacturing jobs from the Midwest to overseas, or south of the border. Just look at the devastating effects on the Detroit real estate market over the last several years due to job loss in the automotive industry. An economic recession will set off a chain of reductions, and the first to go, in many cases, are the employees. Staff reductions are abundant these days. Don't believe me? Just pick up a newspaper, anyone will do. So, does starting a home business offer a level of protection greater than that of an employee? Can just anyone start a home business? The answer is Yes, BUT, you must be willing to develop a positive mindset that will elevate you over any challenges that pop up. To launch a One of Kind Home Business, the power of the mind must first be tapped. Have you ever seen a marathon runner moments away from victory, but physically spent? Their bodies drenched in sweat, their muscles on fire, their lungs about to explode, yet, they push on, overcoming any physical and mental test in their path. Survival is part of human nature, but not all of us survive, especially when it gets tough. Yes folks there was a worthy message in those famous words uttered by many grandfathers and fathers---“When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” Having the right MINDSET is crucial to every entrepreneur determined to start a one of a kind home business. You must sketch the words “Failure is not an option” in your brain, and take a vow never to forget it. Remember the man who was born into poverty, lost his mom at an early age, lost his wife to an illness, lost eight elections, failed at business twice (including bankruptcy), and spent six months in bed from a nervous breakdown? If not, just look up the 16th President of the United States. (Hint: Abraham Lincoln) Oh yea, what about the kid who was cut from his sophomore basketball team? He went on to wear number 23 for the Chicago Bulls---Michael Jordan, won six NBA titles. These are two famous examples of how a strong mindset can help you achieve your goals. But what about the average joe? Remember, that there are far more success stories of folks that you and I never knew, who, because of a solid mindset, overcame all odds and became wealthy. Read the book "The Millionaire Next Door" by Thomas Stanley and you'll know exactly what I mean. Most people who achieve true financial independence are rarely publicized. They don't drive the Mercedes, eat Sushi five days a week, or live in the 8000 square foot custom home. The quiet millionaires fuel this country's economic engine and provide many of us with on-going opportunities. My great uncle lived on a quiet ranch in rural Tennessee, failed four times as a commodities trader before finally achieving financial freedom. Folks, the reason is simple. These people could not spell the word QUIT. They truly had a positive MINDSET and an attitude that would conquer the world. Roadblocks and challenges were (and are) thrown at these people on a daily basis, and they continued to persevere, but, more importantly, they did so with a positive attitude. Tapping the power of the mind can be achieved in many ways. One very effective way is through spiritual faith. I start every day by thanking God for everything I have and will go through. Read encouraging words from The Bible, it can help reinforce a positive mindset. Sit quietly for 20 minutes a day and let your mind rejuvenate. The mind needs rest. Smile at the world no matter what happens. Okay, easier said then done, but the point is to try---never give up on being positive. Most people look to blame others for their perceived problems, don't fall into this trap. Live by the old saying, "Kill them with Kindness," and you will be richly rewarded. Your mind will also benefit from the release of good chemicals during exercise. A brisk walk, swim, jog, or stretch can go a long way in relaxing and strengthening your mind. Folks, you must be mentally prepared for the challenges that inevitably come with trying to start a one of kind home business. Be prepared to get knocked down, but make sure you get back up.
